"I'M READY TO PARTY
AND I BROUGHT MY SPOON!"
Party review...
...by the exiles of craggy island
We began our party excursion a little after 10 PM and our first stop was the anime party in room 367. Everyone was quiet and watching a video. Since we could do that at home, we left quickly.
Down the hall was the Kansas City in '06 bid party, with their amazing hamster-dance toys (We especially loved "Kung Fu Fighting") and feel compelled to mention their innovative bowls.
The Loscon 30 party was full of friendly people. However, the signs went over our heads, as did the explanation. This was not the case with the furry party where we discovered a plethora of appropriately themed food (gummy bears, teddy grahams and bearwiches). This is where we began our food experiments. Without going into minute detail, we can tell you that bearwiches and tabasco are two great tastes that go great together.
Much was learned at the 3½ floor party. For example, did you know that tabasco makes Budweiser taste just like a Jack-in-the-Box taco? Well now you do.
The hot spot of the evening was the Baen Books Party with GOH David Weber, plus other notables. It was difficult to get into the room, but worth the effort. Room 467 was the Eye of Argon. Be afraid. Our favorite party of the night was the party at Hellmouth. We turned their scrumptious Angel Food Cake into fantabulous Angelus Food Cake by simply adding a dash of tabasco.
The "Waisted" party was an interesting concept but a little too much for some of us and we ran away. Our adventures will continue tomorrow with our tale of diabolical experiments in the Con Suite.
OVERHEARD
"Nice patch job." "What needed mending on his neck, anyway?"
"Are you awake?" "Do I look like a party for a dead person to you?"

(InOps)"Reg. needs change." "Yeah? Well Mars needs women." (That's our treasurer for you...)
"I only want your body, not your Krispy Kreme®!"
HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY
Tad Daley, moderator of the Person of the 20th/21st Century Panel, was unanimously elected "Emperor of the Solar System" by all who attended the panel. (Is a battle of the Emperors in the offing?).
ESCAPE!
J. Neil Schulman will be reading from his book, Escape from Heaven in the Pasadena Room, at 7:00 tonight. But if you go, you have to bring your own stupid T shirt.
CARTOONS
Sunday morning, from noon to 1:30, Tom Safer will be showing cartoons from the World War II era. These cartoons contain ethnic humor directed against Japanese and German natives, and might be considered offensive to some. You have been warned, and a warning will be issued at the beginning of the show.
STANDING OH!
Those who missed the Lux After Dark show last night after the Ice Cream Social should begin kicking themselves now, and keep on kicking ...
This was a tour de force on the part of our own Lux Entertainment group, and an incredible display of talent. The performance was given a well-earned standing ovation.
Lux intends to perform this show again, somewhere, somehow. If you hear of a repeat performance, go see it!
NICHELLE NICHOLS
The touchdown arrival of Nichelle Nichols was proclaimed loudly across Planet Loscon at 12:15 PM on Saturday. She drew a moderate crowd of close to a hundred people in the Academy Ballroom at 12:30 PM, talking about her new book Saturna's Quest and also about her time playing Uhura on "Star Trek" (the original series). Her latest book is a sequel to her previous science fiction book, Saturn's Child. She said that following the writing of the first book, there was overwhelming support and pressure to write another. Of the writing process she said that it was, "the most excruciating painful, artistically rewarding, experience in the world ... It consumes you, because the characters all come to life and they all want their due ..."

|
Saturna's Quest has been out for a few months and she just recently came home from spending a month long tour in the United Kingdom (sponsored by Planet X Books). Already she has begun to be pressured for the next book in the series, one of which she says she knows where it will go and how it's going to get there. However, she has two more books to finish with first before she will allow herself to continue the saga. Nichelle has also continued her acting career, still thinking of herself as an actress first. Recently she played the part of Amelia in the Disney movie "Snow Dogs". In fact, she says that with the younger crowd she is beginning to be recognized more for that role than for the more famous one in "Star Trek". As part of her talk, she retold several stories concerning how she got the part of Uhura in "Star Trek" and how she developed the character. In fact, she admitted that she is starting to get tempted by the idea of writing the life history of Uhura and thus providing to the reading public her vision of who Uhura really is. "I guess by now she'd be an Admiral."
THE HEINLEIN SOCIETY
Fans of Robert Heinlein, set your chronometers for Saturday at 12:00 and 4:30, when the Heinlein Society sponsors two panels. "Heinlein and the Year 2000" explores his 1950 predictions for the present day: how close was he? Then "The Year Heinlein Hanged All the Lawyers" looks at his recurring interest in things legal: what did he think of lawyers, and why?
Meet Society representatives and find out what we do to promote Heinlein's life, works, and causes, such as our library program and scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Founded in 2000, our Board of Directors includes Virginia Heinlein, Yoji Kondo, and Charles N. Brown. We develop educational panels, and created the Heinlein Award for excellence in science fiction. The next award will be presented at the Society's Heinlein Dinner at Torcon '03.
Learn about our plans for the 2007 centennial of Heinlein's birth - get involved at the outset of this eclectic celebration! We want your ideas, time and money: drop by our table at the con or reach us via our web site at <www.heinleinsociety.org>
