ISSUE # 6 DEADLINE

Have news items in to the editor by 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 6.

BLOOD DRIVE

The Blood Moon Blood Drive has now left Planet Loscon's Orbit.   Thanks again to all those who left their blood at Moonbase A-Positive and made it another successful blood drive.   35 units of blood in total were sucked out.   Here are the winners of the blood drive raffle: The winner of the front row seats at the masquerade was Rick Hoglund.   A $10 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble went to Thomas B. Evans.   "Chain" linked up with a $20 gift certificate to the same place, and Jace Foss won the free membership to Loscon #30.
Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to all who gave blood at the drive!

THE EVANS- FREEHAFER AWARD

This award is given for service to the LASFS.   It is awarded every year by a secret conclave of the previous three winners.   This year's winner is Mike Donahue.   He has taken the lead this year in remodeling the clubhouse.   This previous member of the club's Board of Directors is the driving force behind the push to build a new, larger clubhouse.
    Congratulations, Mike!

IT'S ALL TADAO'S FAULT

Yes, it's true.   It's all Tadao's fault.   The buck stops with him.   So does the Euro, the Credit, and the Centauri Ducat.

SHOWER POWER!

Water has healing power, or at least so the researchers say.   Salt also has purifying power, and technically, soap is a salt.   Anyone who hasn't already done so is encouraged to mix salt and water, and be made pure.
In fact, the Lather Day Saints strongly recommend this practice...

PARTY REVEIWS

by Chaos
Furry West Pary, Rm. 362
Convention in April to promote anthropomorphic "furry" fandom.   To be held in Burbank.
The Kansas City in 2006 Party, Rm. 365
Bidding against the ever so very popular Los Angeles party.   It had cheese, crackers, and inflatable instruments.   (Media bias? No way!!! I Categorically deny it!!!)
Hellmouth, Rm. 466
Fights against the Forces of Darkness.   Spike wouldn't like it here, unless Buffy had a crush on him or something.   (Tom Galloway says we simply must mention the Shoot Spike game at this party.)
Herbangelist, Rm. 458
This event had tasty wine, cheese, and was In Memoriam of Bruce Pelz.   (Karl Lembke is very proud of the mead he donated to the party, and which many seemed to enjoy.)
Baen Books, Rm. 465
This party is to promote Baen authors who are having a sizeable impact on fannish society.   They seem to be armed with rocket fuel and with blasters of some sort.
Harold & Lisa Harrigan 25th Anniversary Party, Rm. 456
To commemorate a long 25 years of marriage.   Long life to them both and a prosperous future.
Ice Cream Social, Ballroom
Ice cream went quickly over the course of the first 10 minutes of the line flowing into the room.   It was decent, and was ... to say the least ... amusing.
Fandom Online Party, Rm. 127
The E-fandom party is about fanzine fame, publicity, and the meeting of fans from all across the globe.

RANDOM CONVERSATIONS

"J. Edgar's more paranoid days..." "What RPG was he playing? Paranoia?"
- Overheard by a passing Gamer

"Pick up some chocolate to die for."   "Are you sure it wasn't to die from?"   "Well, I ain't dead yet..."
---- Overheard by a passing partygoer.

"Wait a minute.   They're assuming no fan guest of honor would smoke marijuana?"

"Send down more parachuting aliens!"
"Yeah, our women need Martians!"

GAMING

Saturday

12 PMMagic Tournament (Extended)
2 PMRole Playing Game - Godholm
3 PMDemo - Nano Fictionary Storytelling Card Game "Looney Labs"
5 PMMagic Mania Master #2
8 PMLive Action - Star Wars

GHOST SIGHTINGS

More ghosts were sighted in the hotel elevators.   "I could see right through them - all eighteen of them!" stated our informant.
There appears to be a pattern in the sightings.   For some reason, the ghost always seems to be associated with tropical fruit.   One witness says the ghost has a large hat with tropical fruit on it.   Is this a physical manifestation of the supernatural?

WHERE'S THE SPOONS?

The line was very long, twisting on itself in the lobby.   But the Ice Cream Social opened up on time (or as a person inside said, "on time as these things ever are, or actually more so.")
The line moved very fast, and so did the ice cream, which was gone before 7:30.   The multiple flavors were hailed by all, especially the vanilla with jalapeņo sauce.   And the call went out, "Spoons... More spoons!"

VERIP SAYING "VE-GONE"

VERIP Books is having a Going-Out-of-Business sale.   All books are 50% off.   Buy them now, or they go to EBay.

The Volunteer Department has three items to raffle off.   Tickets are free, but you must rack up at least four hours of volunteer time at the convention itself (excludes truck loading and unloading) to qualify for a ticket.
Any questions about the items being raffled, see Katt at the volunteer booth.

HANUKKAH

Hanukkah was celebrated on Friday night in the filk room, with the sermons.   Seven filkers attended.   Friday night was the first night of Hanukkah.   Seven days, and one bad Adam Sandler movie, remain.

THE HEINLEIN SOCIETY

Fans of Robert Heinlein, set your chronometers for Saturday at 12:00 and 4:30, when the Heinlein Society sponsors two panels.   "Heinlein and the Year 2000" explores his 1950 predictions for the present day: how close was he?   Then "The Year Heinlein Hanged All the Lawyers" looks at his recurring interest in things legal: what did he think of lawyers, and why?
Meet Society representatives and find out what we do to promote Heinlein's life, works, and causes, such as our library program and scholarships for graduating high school seniors.   Founded in 2000, our Board of Directors includes Virginia Heinlein, Yoji Kondo, and Charles N. Brown.   We develop educational panels, and created the Heinlein Award for excellence in science fiction.   The next award will be presented at the Society's Heinlein Dinner at Torcon '03.
Learn about our plans for the 2007 centennial of Heinlein's birth - get involved at the outset of this eclectic celebration!   We want your ideas, time and money: drop by our table at the con or reach us via our web site at <www.heinleinsociety.org>
