The Planet Loscon Station Æry
Vol. 29, Issue 1 ---- Friday, November 29, MMII

We started with nothing --- and we still have most of it left!
Warm Body Count: 74 as of Thursday evening.

Program Changes

Due to unforseen circumstances, Rhondi Violett Salsitz will not be attending the convention.

The panel "Creating, Developing and Selling an Animated Series" is limited to twenty people. Please sign up with the information desk, first come, first served. Panel starts Sunday, 10:00 AM

Special guest appearance: Saturday, Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek's Uhura) will be promoting her new book, Saturna's Quest. Welcome!

If you are reading this, thank you for attending Loscon 29, the twenty-ninth annual Los Angeles Science-fiction convention, hosted by the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society! The concom has been working itself half to death, and fully expects to work itself the rest of the way there over this weekend, to make this event fun and entertaining for all who appear. But even with the best guests, the best program, and the best parties, it wouldn't be a con without all the members who show up each year.
(If you're not reading this, then you should!)

WARNING!!

The convention has a weapons policy. Weapons are to be peace bonded or non-existent. Any weapons that do not adhere to policy will be confiscated.

WARNING!!

Picture taking is not allowed in the Art Show. Taking photographs of unwilling subjects is frowned upon and may result in unpleasant consequences, up to and including revocation of convention membership.

SUBSCRIBE!

If you're staying at the hotel, have the Station Æry (guaranteed to be on stationery, and we'll try to keep it reasonably stationary) delivered to your door! Delivery will be before 9:00 AM in the mornings, and before 6:00 PM in the evenings. Contact the editor through Con Ops, or in room 366 for details or to sign up.
You can also drop a request in any of the news drop envelopes, or in the "in" box next to the mimeograph in Con Ops.

BLOOD DRIVE: ALERT

Notice: If you're planning to donate blood at the blood drive, please be aware that the drive itself ends at 4:00 PM.
Please keep this in mind as you plan your Friday! And please give, if you can.

FUGITIVES FROM THE PROGRAM BOOK!

Friday night's events are:
Ice Cream Social, taking place at 7:00 PM in the Ballroom. Ice creams from all the worlds of known and explored space will be featured, along with ambassadors to make excuses for them. Planets that have signed up are: Planet C/FO, Planet Anime, Planet Meddlers, Planet Gallifrey, Planet Galaxy, Planet FanBaen, Planet Pluto.
After the ice cream has melted, we will announce this year's winner of the Evans

Freehafer award, given in recognition of service to the LASFS.
Following this announcement, Lux Radio Theatre will entertain us with their presentation of L'Etoile Rouge.
After this, the hall will be filled with 80's style dancing until the last dancers totter off to bed.
Keep an eye out for Regency Dancing, held Friday evening. We don't have a start time as yet, but it won't start before the Ice Cream Social does!
Saturday night, the masquerade begins at about 8:00 PM, with set-up beginning at 7:30. Register for the masquerade before noon, Saturday!
M.O.U.S. - Ministry Of Unknown Science - presents its cadre of ministers, presenting a variety of scientific facts, unknown to modern man. (Rated PG-13)
Following this, Shawn Crosby will host a dance for those who have recovered from Friday night.
Sunday night, we have the Dead Dog Party. (Who let the Dead Dogs out?)

CALLING ALL ARTISTS!

The Planet Loscon Station Æry is sponsoring a contest! We're looking for line drawing art, suitable for use on the covers of Recommended Reading lists, book marks, and LASFS book covers.
The First Place entry will receive a free membership in Loscon 30, which may be transferred if the winner is one of those folks who racks up lots of volunteer hours.
The winning entry will be featured in the Sunday Morning issue, and other entries will appear in other issues of the Æry, provided they're not absolutely horrible.
All entries become property of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, Inc., which entity retains all rights thereto.

(This applies only to material entered for the contest. All rights to any other material revert to their authors or creators at the end of Loscon 29, or at midnight PST, December 2, 2002, whichever occurs first.)

CARTOONS IN THE MORNING

Loscon will be hosting Tom Safer, and his cartoon shows every day.
Friday, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM:
Rare moments from the Jay Ward studios. Two rarely seen, but very clever programs from the studios of television pioneer, Jay Ward. The first 90 minutes will show four episodes from Jay Ward's one attempt at a live action variety show.
"Fractured Flickers" stars Hans Conried as the host of the show.
This show takes old silent flickers and has them re-edited into a totally different story with some well known voices to add more spice to the silliness.

ISSUE #2 DEADLINE

Have news items in to the editor by 4:00 PM on Friday, November 29. Pretty please!
The Station Æry will be published twice daily, with deadlines at 4:00 PM for the afternoon/evening editions, and at 12:00 AM for the morning editions. There may be a post-mortem issue printed Sunday evening, or after the con is wrapped up, if there is sufficient material to engage the editor Those who want a copy should see that the editor gets a SASE.

DEALER'S ROOM

The Dealer's room hours are 10 AM - 6 PM Friday, 10 AM - 7 PM Saturday, 10 AM - 4 PM Sunday.

ATTENTION ALL PARTIES!

We have designated Noisy Floors. The third and fourth floors are set aside for noisy

things like room parties. All other floors are designated Quiet Floors, and only quiet parties are allowed there - noisy ones are subject to being shut down.
If you are planning to host a room party, and you're not on a Noisy Floor, please contact our hotel liaison to see about changing your venue.

HALL COSTUME AWARDS

To all who have assembled hall costumes, thank you! This is the kind of thing that helps make a convention. (And my adopted nephews are very eager to see lots of hall costumes - this is their first con.)

HOTEL FOOD

Not a contradiction in terms! If you don't feel like leaving the hotel, you can eat at the Daily Grill.
The Breakfast Buffet at the Daily Grill is (just) under $10.

WHO GOES THERE?

Staff members helping with set-up last night reported an unusual occurrence. A person was observed entering the Green Room. When this staff member, who wishes to remain anonymous, followed, the room was empty. There was no way for this person to leave unobserved.
Our informant states that she only saw this person out of the corner of her eye. She believes the individual observed is female, and she was wearing a large, and very colorful hat. This may have been part of a hall costume.
Planet Loscon Station personnel request that everyone keep an eye out for such an individual during the convention.
