Loscon 32 Writer Guest of Honor
STEVEN BRUST

I'm the author of nineteen novels and one solo record.   I'm an enthusiastic amateur drummer, guitarist, banjo player, and poker player.

I'm being published by Tor Books. [Visit Steven Brust's Bibliography page]

I have, as I mentioned above, one solo record,  "A Rose For Iconoclastes".

I have written some of the songs for the Worldbeat band  Boiled In Lead, including, particularly,  Songs From The Gypsy, which is the recording of a cycle of songs I wrote with BiL guitarist Adam Stemple, which cycle turned into a novel I wrote with Megan Lindholm, one of my favorite writers.

Speaking of favorite writers, I have the honor to be in a writer's group with Emma Bull, Kara Dalkey, Pamela Dean, and Will Shetterly.

There's been some speculation on the Internet about my politics.   Without going into great detail, I'll say that I am a Trotskyist sympathizer, and for more information check out The World Socialist Web Site.   Enough said.

There's also been some speculation about the Pre-Joycean Fellowship.   The best explanation I can make is that we exist to poke fun at the excesses of modern literature while simultaneously mining it for everything of value.   Does that help?   I didn't think so.

"Dream Cafe" (one of Steven Brust's websites) is a reference to the title song of a record by Greg Brown, who, along with Dave Van Ronk, is among my favorite songwriter/performers.   Check them out if you haven't.

If there are questions about the books, I probably won't answer them because I enjoy hearing the speculations.   But you never know; there might be something I want to talk about at the con, like the Cool Theory of Literature, or something.   So ask.

Cheers.   Catch you on the Funway.
Steven Brust

COMMENTS FROM THE CON CHAIR

One of the decisions a con chair gets to make is who the guest of honor will be.   Now granted, the guest has a lot to say in the matter, too.   A guest need not accept the invitation.   Because I am very mindful of this, I am very grateful to Steven Brust for accepting my invitation to be the Author Guest of Honor at Loscon 32.

Why did I choose Steven Brust?   Well, first and foremost, because I can.   I did, and he accepted, and I like his stories.

You want something that fits the theme of the convention?   OK, how about this?

Anna Russel once said, "you can do anything in grand opera, so long as you sing it."   Likewise, you can do anything in a story, so long as you set it on another planet.   You can write about the most bizarre customs, once you make it clear that it's happening someplace else.

In his own particular someplace else, Steven Brust introduces us to a professional assassin we can actually sympathize with, and whom we might consider having as a friend.   Of course, an assassin isn't nearly as threatening in a world where the victims don't always stay dead, where reincarnation is a fact of life, and magic works.

It's also a world where humans are not the dominant players, and an alien species is in charge.   Humans may befriend their betters, but can never become their peers.

Steven Brust writes fun stories that stretch the mind.

Take a journey into his world, and this one won't be quite the same.
