  • Newbies Guide to the Art Show

    1. Many Science Fiction Conventions have an Art Show (or an Art Exhibit or Print Shop) and sale. Rules for Art Shows vary. Check with the Art Show Staff for the Rules at this Art Show.
    2. Artist's Alley, Commune, or Ghetto is where artists demonstrate art techniques, sign autographs, and sell their own art. Artist's Alley is usually not part of the Art Show.
    3. The Print Shop is an area that contains prints of original art that is displayed somewhere else in the Art Show. You can buy items in the Print Shop and take them right away.
    4. The Art Show may have security, such as checking your bags.
    5. Do not take pictures in the Art Show.
    6. Do not eat or drink in the Art Show.
    7. Do not touch the art.
    8. The art may be for sale; if the art is not for sale, it may be marked "Not for Sale" or "NFS."
    9. When you buy art in the Art Show, you are usually asked to leave the art on the wall until the last day of the convention, so that everyone can see it.
    10. If you want to Bid for a piece or buy it at Quick Sale, you must register with the Art Show Staff. They will give you a bidder number and tell you the rules of this Art Show.
    11. Usually, if no one has bid on the piece you want, you can buy it at Quick Sale for the Quick Sale Price listed on the Bid Sheet. Ask the Art Show Staff about the rules of Quick Sale.
    12. If you would like to Bid on a piece, put your bidder number and the amount of money you would like to bid on the first available line on the Bid Sheet. If you can't find the Bid Sheet, ask the Art Show Staff.
    13. Putting your bidding number on a piece of art is a contract. You have agreed to buy this piece for the amount you bid, unless someone else bids higher.
    14. You may want to come back to check on your piece before the beginning of the Art Auction. If someone has outbid you, you can decide whether or not to outbid him or her.
    15. If no one else bids on your piece, you will be purchasing it at the price that you agreed to pay when you put your bidder number on the Bid Sheet.
    16. If enough people have bid on your piece to fill up the bid sheet, the piece goes to the Art Auction.
    17. The Art Auction is usually on the last or second-to-last day of the convention. It can be fun to watch the Art Auction, even if you have not bid on any pieces. You must have a bidder number assigned by the Art Show Staff to bid in the Art Auction.
    18. Art that is not sold by the last day of the convention MAY be available for purchase at minimum bid price. Ask the Art Show Staff, if you're not sure.
    19. If you win a Bid or have placed the minimum bid, you must pick your art up before the end of the convention, or arrange for someone to do it for you. The Art Show Staff will tell you when art must be picked up.
