Debbie Lynn Smith was born in Barberton, Ohio and spent my formative years growing up on a farm. I wore white frilly dresses and white patent leather shoes and hung out with my grandfather at the pig pen. I’m amazed to report I didn’t get a spec of mud on me. My how times have changed. I no longer want to wear frilly things. I’m more comfortable in jeans and tennis shoes. And I’m not quite as good at keeping the mud off.

I wrote my first short story when I was eight years old. Years later, I ended up writing for such television shows as “Murder, She Wrote”; “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and “Touched by an Angel.” I’ve published numerous short stories in horror anthologies and have written audio dramas for the 60s classic soap, Dark Shadows, one of which was nominated for a Scribe Award. I have a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Stonecoast at the University of Southern Maine and am a proud graduate of Clarion West, Class of 2004.

I hadn’t read comic books since I was a kid, so when Maggie suggested I turn my television pilot, “Gates of Midnight,” into a comic, I spent two years reading all the Indie Comics I could get my hands on. Maggie and I also attended comic conventions and spent quite a bit of time talking to fans. I also found, downloaded, and studied comic book scripts. Now that I’m actually writing my own comic, I find that this medium really suits me. I love the brevity, the collaborative aspect, and the way my vision comes to life with so few words. I feel like I’ve come home.
