President Matthew Tepper called two-bit meeting #4047 to order at 8:00

Comments from the President

We have very little to do, and lots of time to do it.  Strike that, reverse it.

We have some announcements.

CLJII eulogized a member of the Star Trek family, Producer Harve Bennett, who produced several of the Star Trek feature films. We also have an announcement.

On March 28, we will have a celebration of the life of the late Leonard Nimoy. We will have clips and rare TV interviews, guest speakers, and an opportunity for people to speak. This will run 2 PM until it ends. 6:30, we screen Wrath of Khan.

Nimoy was an actor, photographer, poet, stage actor, singer, and also was the father of LASFS member Adam Nimoy. We held a long moment of silence in his honor.

Condolences to be sent, a real condolence card.

Marty Cantor announced that on the 26th, Harlan Ellison will be here, but this is not to be a book signing event. He will be speaking member to member. He will autograph a book if it’s new, otherwise it’s $50/signature.

SFWA has an award called the Grand Master Award.  The newest honoree is our own Larry Niven.  And there was much rejoicing.

Menace from last meeting were read.  Michelle Pincus bid $5.00 to name them “These minutes brought to you by 2016, Starship Loscon” They were so accepted.

We do have some money in the treasury:

You can’t spend any of it.

We honored tonight’s Patron Saint:

Patron Saint Dave Fox

Mark Poliner: Thirty years ago, came to LASFS and first two people I met was Dave and Hare, and he came back anyway.

Hare: One thing he was notorious for was being unofficial Dirty Old Man. When he died, the local strip club down the street went out of business.

Marty Cantor: read in story about how he would turn down his hearing aid.

After he died, several people were helping to clean out his place. Didn’t he leave a will? He was a big fan of Sherlock Holmes and Edgar Allan Poe. Bill Warren said if he left a will, it would probably be stuck to that bulletin board.

Thorson: Dave Fox was instrumental in the repairs around the club because the power tools he gave us still function.

From the Hagiography:

was voted LASFS's Official Dirty Old Man

contributor to APA-L

attended club meetings from the third meeting on, except for his time in the Marine Corps.

invented a little Mediterranean country, Khorlia, located between France and Italy. The history and lore of Khorlia may be found in the APA-L archives.

Lee & Barry Gold also published an anthology of Fox's Khorlian writings.

father of Ellen Elizabeth, known as Vixen, a Bay Area fan.

Patron Saint Dave Fox was given three cheers and a Khorlian fan dancer.

Registrar Ed Hooper: We have two guests. Maren Haugen, Darkover fan. Johnny Nicely, an Uber driver. If he drives nicely enough, does that make him an Uber-mensch?

Committee Reports

David Okamura had a moment of science.

Scientists are working to see how Curiosity is faring.

Dawn spacecraft is approaching Ceres, and seeing spots on the asteroid.

Spring Forward this Sunday. Time to do spring cleaning.

National Parks have lint camp, to clean up stuff left behind by tourists, including lint, dead skin, hair, etc. The crews of volunteers go through with tweezers and other cleaning implements.

A gray whale was spotted off Dana Point harbor, embracing a female gray whale, for 28 hours on and off.

Green sea turtles are very rare. They found a colony of 30 in the San Gabriel River. At the mouth of the river, there are two steam plants, and the turtles like it warm.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has announced he located the sister ship of the Yamato. He has a yacht that puts the old Calypso to shame. He was searching for 8 years, most of it spent waiting for Windows to boot up.

Jerry Pournelle had a couple of items about AI.

IBM is working on a program where you can tell Watson what you have in your kitchen and it will suggest what you ought to cook. If you need spices or other ingredients it will suggest.  One ingredient it suggested was orange peels. How does it know what orange peels taste like? It infers from its knowledge of ingredients. The fact it can infer what you will like when it can’t experience it is significant.

A quadriplegic lady, about 70 years of age, can fly an F 35. She thinks where she wants the plane to go, and it flies there. Granted, it’s a simulation, but if you can fly that, you can fly the real thing.

3/19/15: Big Auction

3/26/15: A local author will speak and not sign books.

Upcoming will be a marc schirmeister video slide show.

Frank Waller watched the last Avengers movie, with lots of hardware and violence

Nick Smith saw Kingsmen, a modernized Steed and Peel Avengers movie, if their organization had been a private concern.  If you like Steed and Peel, you’ll like the organization of the Kingsmen. Samuel Jackson should have been reined in a bit.

Frank Waller announced it rained Sunday.  Super Car Sunday meets this weekend at the usual place. South Topanga Mall, 8 AM until 10:30 AM.

Jerry Pournelle has an e-mail from a usually reliable source. A company has bought “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” and is making a movie. They’re renaming the movie.  Nick Smith notes both Moon and Stars My Destination have entered options. The title may have been a working title.

Heide Dragon Riders of Pern has been optioned, and a screen writer has been picked.

Jerry Pournelle: SFWA has decided to accept independently published and self published works for membership, and the rules are complicated. You have to have made as much money as you would have gotten from an advance from a publisher. This puts them only a year behind the Author’s guild.

The chairleader announcement was made.

Adjournment: It was moved and seconded, and we adjourned at 9:25 PM
