We have no new business

Committee Reports

Registrar Pro Tem Liz Carlie announced we have guests.  Scott Rosendahl,

Patron Saint Doug Abe

Marty: He hasn’t been around for a while.  He’s of Japanese descent, but doesn’t speak the language.  He was sent to be a representative in Japan and had enormous trouble because people would assume he spoke Japanese.

Last time he was here, was at the old building.  He brought a box of books to be given away to any who wanted them.

Joe Zeff: On the rare occasions he comes to the clubhouse, he brings cardboard boxes of paperbacks he’s read and gives them out.

Liz Carlie: If he gives people free books, he’s got to be an amazing human being.

And we gave Doug Abe three cheers and a book box.

CLJII announced:  On 7/27: we have the LASFS official memorial event in honor of Ray Harryhausen.  We will have speakers, trailers, and a double feature of his films, Earth vs the Flying Saucers and Seventh Voyage of Sinbad.

Tom Safer:

July programs, 7/6 has an all-day screening, Captain America and Thor, both 2011 films, along with the 1966 animated counterparts. Mighty Marvel Comics Series shows.

7/20, TSPC screens a non-animated film, Mr Popper’s Penguins with Jim Carrey

7/25, a special Bugs Bunny show for his saints’ day.  He’s also taking requests.

Presidential announcements

7/11 special election for vacant Board seat.

18th, big auction

25th, TSP Bugs Bunny

8/1: LASFS feedback session.

Marcia Minsky reviewed the private event over the weekend.  It was a beautiful wedding, and the poliners catered the food.  A good time was had by all.

Marty said the wedding was so great he hopes they do it again.

Larry Niven just finished reading The Unincorporated Man.  It’s great.  It’ll speak for itself.

Peter read Van Vogt’s Empire of the Atom and Wizard of Linn, which are a take-off on I Claudius.

Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven were working on something.  It was Larry’s turn to write.  Jerry read Vance’s Demon Prince stories.  Most will be somewhat familiar with Vance, but it’s very odd. Jerry had forgotten how good a wordsmith Vance was.  His stories are closer to fantasy than SF. You might want to read Vance’s work if you haven’t. He’s the kind of guy you want to write like. He’s good at creating characters in only a couple of paragraphs.

Marty: There’s an English writer by the name of China Meville who’s been writing in the Vance style, badly.  So of course he’s popular.

Eylat had a clothing review.  Mike Workman was wearing a great costume.

Fannish Committee Reports

Joe Zeff: Joe had to visit the Wilshire VA for one of his doctor appointments.  When he got home, he had one piece of mail.  It was a letter from the VA reminding him of his appointment that day.

Tom Safer: yesterday turns out to be the day to misspell stuff. Saw a Yahoo video welcoming people to Efarta, not Efreta, PA.  And Flordia St College.

Karl: Tom Digby mentioned a magic typewriter where a typo resulted in being teleported to an alternate universe where the typo was the correct spelling.

Scratch had a bad science report.  On the radio and You Tube, there’s a new-ish strain of ants that has been brought into the US.  Crazy ants is the designation.  (I had one of those once. -- Jerry Pournelle.)  They breed like crazy, and if killed, excrete a chemical that draws reinforcements by the hundreds. They have an affinity for electric fields, to the point where they have been infesting and breaking electrical devices, transformers, etc.

Tom Safer moved we adjourn.  We adjourned at 8:35 or so.
