Menace of the LASFS

February 19, 2009

Mike Thorsen, Presiding

Karl Lembke, Scribe

Meeting 3732 was rapped into submission at 20:12:24

Special Orders of Business

Two items. First is celebratory. 3/8, American Cinamatech will host the official tribute to Forry Ackerman at the Egyptian. There's a pay event in the evening. Tickets are selling out fast.

Second item: We've lost another member of the club, a major wheel for a number of years. Chuck Crayne passed on his 71st birthday.

Marty Cantor passed along some details. From Dian, his wife, about a month ago, Chuck complained of a sore back that was getting worse, not better. He got a CT scan. They found half his lumbar vertebrae was eroded away, presumably cancer. He died 2/16, three days after the CT scan.

Jerry Pournelle noted we would not have had the clubhouse without him. Bruce Pelz and Chuck Crane started the building fund. They invented the notion of the Great Big Convention. In 1961, World con in Seattle had 361 members. Chicon in 62 was 450. That was a Big Convention in those days. C&B decided it would be possible to have a really big convention. FIASOI! He was also one of the 5 best poker players in the Los Angeles area.

Marty Cantor added, Chuck was a co-inventor of Boucher Con. Also, he invented NASFIC. He also chaired a bidding committee for what would have been AngelCon in 81. That one lost to Denver, and the 84 in LA bid went forward and won.

The Menace were read and approved as “Them”.

The Registrar announced that we have a plethora of guests.

So much for agenda lite

Six guests!

Julia D. Ree, Kim Rivard, Ken Mencher, Sydney Mills, Amanda Egol, and finally, Joey Dizon.

Seth Tolley joined tonight.

Patron Saint

Maureen Garrett

Matthew Tepper recalled her as a delightful and charming young lady who attended in the 70s and 80s. She was in charge of the Star Wars fan club for a while. She was in APA-L, having contributed art. She would draw fantasy landscapes inside a circle. She currently lives in the Bay Area.

Marty Cantor said that Maureen got to be a very good artist, but early on, she was a little better than adequate. She did the first cover for his fanzine, “Holier than Thou”.

No old business.

No new business.
