Menace of the LASFS

February 12, 2009

Mike Thorsen, Presiding

Karl Lembke, Scribe

Meeting 3731 was rapped into submission at 20:09:52

Special Orders of Business

The Emperor had some special orders of business.

We note the passing of two individuals:

Actor Phil Carey, best known for being on a soap opera, and granny goose, and one of the scientists in The Time Travelers.

Also James Whitmore, who was in a Planet of the Apes movie, and the star in Face of Fire. He was also in Them, along with Terrifying Horrifying Exiting Mysterious giant ants.

For these two, we had a brief moment of silence.

The Menace were read and approved as “Khan” in the key of “K”

The Registrar announced that we have a guest. Actually, it's a new member. Melissa joined at the last Loscon.

No old business.

No new business.

Patron Saint Craig Miller

George Mulligan recalls that he was here 25 years ago when George started coming. He used to be very involved even back then.

Christian: Craig unintentionally showed up to his own sainthood night. Like many who were here long enough, they don't remember their sainthood night, or why they're here, or much of anything else. He's been proving himself an asset for 41 years, so he's the answer, minus one. He chaired the Board for ten years, ran a Loscon, was involved in chairing a Worldcon, and a few other things. And he's one of the people not credited with creating comic book fandom.

Hare Hobbs: He was the first person to ask him to do something at a convention. His volunteering is Craig's fault. 'I take it back!' – Craig

Jerry Pournelle said it's worth noting Mrs. CC Miller was the committee to keep the park happy when the club was meeting there.

Bill Ellern remembers Craig when they both had hair.

“That was before he swore eternal vengeance on Superman”. – CLJII

Christian: The most valuable thing he did was steal Jenny Dazzo from New York Fandom.

Craig Miller was given three cheers and a star wars trilogy.

Appointed Committee Reports

Christian reported that next Thursday is a Big Auction. It's not as big as expected, but it's still big.

Arlene Satin announced a Marketing meeting this Wednesday.

Brett Achorn announced Cinema Anime this Saturday from 1-8.

Elayne called for payment of dues and for people to come get their ballots.

Heidi Nichols reported that the Code of Conduct Committee meets 2/23 and 3/5 and would love to hear from club members.

Time Bound Announcements

Ed Hooper announced this little Dr Who convention.

Elayne announced March 19, 26, and April 2, we deal with by-laws. The 19th is a reading of the whole thing.

Mike Thorsen thanked Vanessa Van Wagner, our departing librarian for the work she's put in.

Science Report: Michelle Pincus announced two satellites collided a while back. It was between a US communication satellite and a defunct Russian satellite. This created two clouds of debris, currently being tracked.
