Moviemakers have mined SF novels and short stories for material since the first years of film, when Georges Méliès cribbed from Jules Verne and H.G. Wells to make "A Trip to the Moon" in 1902. Turns out it was a good idea. Many of the most successful movies of all time are based on genre works.
