Meeting # 4132, 10/20/2016 PDF Print E-mail

President Nick Smith, presiding

Kristen Renee Gorlitz, scribbling

Meeting #4132 began at 8:00 pm.

This week’s Patron Saints are

Randy Greiner - original human wallet

Michael Mason -

They were each given three rousing cheers.

Jerry Pournelle bid $1 to name the Menace “Yawn”.

Committee Reports

Special Orders of Business -

Ted V. Michaels has passed - he was a writer, producer, actor, director for the last 53 years. He worked on many low budget sci-fi and horror movies including Astro-Zombies. Not only did it make money, but they made three sequels to Astro-Zombies over the years.

We lost Ed Gorman - a sci-fi author and editor. He wrote under multiple pseudonyms. We have stuff in the library under at least three of the pseudonyms. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to his pseudonyms.

We also lost David Banelle - the founder of PC magazine, Mac World, PC World, Bio World. He died just this week.

Library report -

  1. We need help identifying books not in the library collection, but should be. Help us find what’s missing.

  2. We have new books on sale shelf. Please buy!

  3. Oct 17th issue of the New Yorker has a major article on Ursula K Le Guin. This will be available in the library.

Treasurer’s report - we have money, and you can’t spend it.

Programs

10/20 - Big auction

10/27 - Walt Disney featurette “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” as told by Bing Crosby

Moment of Science

Nick Smith filled in for David Okamura - European Space Agency’s Mars Lander almost landed successfully: the heat shield worked, the parachute deployed and opened properly, but it let go too soon. It landed much harder than it was expected to land. But, this is not a total failure. Everything worked, but not at the right time.

Time Bound Announcements

Aetna warning at 8:50 pm

We had a BIG auction. Alex helped tremendously by buying many items, raising a lot of money for the club!

There was...

No new business.

No new business.

Jerry Pournelle reports that Larry Niven went to the emergency room Monday night, but he is alright now. He is in good shape.

In the absence of any further business...

A motion to put away chairs and tables passed and we adjourned at 9:05 pm.
